What the calculator takes into account
A limitation period is the period within which a person may apply to court to protect a civil right or interest. The general limitation period for most civil claims is three years.
The starting point is most often linked to the day a person learned or could have learned of the infringement of their right or the identity of the infringer. However, separate rules may apply to contracts with a specified performance date, recourse claims, invalidity of transactions, and other categories.
The calculator provides only a calendar estimate. It does not automatically add weekends, public holidays, periods of suspension or interruption, quarantine rules, or martial-law rules. For disputes in Kyiv and Kyiv Oblast, check the documents and current case law.
Calculation methodology
Methodology for determining the limitation period
- The user independently determines the date on which the limitation period begins in their situation.
- The calculator adds three calendar years as the general limitation period.
- For impossible dates in the ending year, use the last day of the relevant month.
- Special deadlines, suspension, interruption, wartime rules, and a party’s application to the court must be checked separately.
Calculation example
A person in Kyiv learned of the rights violation on April 22, 2024 and wants to assess the general 3-year limitation period.
- Start date in the calculation: 22.04.2024
- General time limit: 3 years
Estimated last day of the general limitation period: April 22, 2027.
The date may change due to a special limitation period, interruption, suspension, or other rules.

Frequently asked questions
Can I file a claim immediately based on this date?
Treat the date as a draft estimate. Before filing, check the type of claim, the correct trigger date, evidence of the violation, the contract, and possible defenses by the respondent.
Which date is considered the start of the limitation period?
As a general rule, this is the date on which the person learned or could have learned of the infringement of their right. The law sets a special starting point for certain claims.
If the deadline has passed, does that mean you will lose in court?
Not automatically. The court accepts the claim for consideration and applies the limitation period only if a party to the dispute raises it, unless there are grounds for a different conclusion.
Is suspension or interruption of the time limit taken into account?
No. The calculator does not analyze acknowledgment of debt, filing a claim, moratoria, martial law, or other events that may affect the running of the time limit.
Can a contract change the 3-year period?
Such terms are not permitted in every form. Separately check the contract text and Civil Code rules on changing the limitation period.
Why does February 29 move to February 28?
This is a technical calendar convention used by the calculator for years without February 29: the date is not moved into March but capped at the last day of February.
