Calculatorpreliminary calculation
Debts of the deceased
Calculator for an heir’s liability for debts
If an heir in Kyiv or Kyiv Oblast has already accepted the inheritance and the creditor has made a claim supported by documents, enter that heir’s established share and the value of the property they actually received. The calculator does not determine the share or establish the debt; it only shows a preliminary individual upper limit.

Preliminary cap for one heir
The calculation applies the already confirmed share to the already confirmed debt amount, caps the result at the value of the property received by this heir, and deducts amounts already paid.
A narrow model for one specific heir. Do not use it to determine shares, the creditor deadline, joint liability, or reallocate another heir’s unpaid amount.
Enter the amount after checking the basis, components and payments. A creditor’s assumption or an unverified bank calculation is not an established debt.
Use the value of the specific property received by this heir. If the valuation is disputed or the property is encumbered, a separate review is needed.
Include only confirmed payments for the same claim. Zero is allowed.
Preliminary calculation
Debt not establishedThis is not an amount the heir automatically has to pay. The result is an upper limit only based on the data entered and confirmed.
- Debt at the entered share
- 450 000,00 UAH
- Value of property received
- 380 000,00 UAH
- Limit before accounting for amounts paid
- 380 000,00 UAH
- Already paid
- 80 000,00 UAH
Formula: min(⌊900 000,00 UAH × 50%⌋, 380 000,00 UAH) − 80 000,00 UAH = 300 000,00 UAH
Rounding: The debt share is rounded down to whole kopecks. Other entered amounts are not rounded.
Several creditors: The value of property received is one overall cap for all claims against this heir. The full value cannot be applied separately to each creditor; the calculator does not allocate the shared limit among claims.
Important: First check whether the obligation is part of the estate at all, whether the creditor retained the claim, how the property value was determined, and whether there is security or a court decision.
The brief summary is easy to paste into a message to a lawyer or save for yourself.
What exactly the calculator calculates
Only obligations of the deceased that did not end upon death pass to the estate. Before doing the arithmetic, separate proven debts from personal or other non-transferable obligations.
For a claim that remains enforceable, each heir is personally liable up to the amount corresponding to their share of the inheritance, but not beyond the value of the property received by that heir. The calculator applies these two numerical limits in sequence.
Calculation methodology
Preliminary calculation methodology
- Use the confirmed total amount of a single claim, without independently adding components.
- The amount is multiplied by the documented percentage share of the specific heir.
- The product is rounded down to whole kopecks so the calculator does not increase the upper limit through rounding.
- The share allocation is compared with the value of property actually received by this heir; the lower amount is used.
- Subtract this heir’s confirmed payments toward the same claim from the resulting limit; the result cannot be less than zero.
Example: the debt share exceeds the value of property received
In an inheritance case in Kyiv, a debt of UAH 900,000 and an heir’s 50% share have been confirmed. The heir actually received property worth UAH 380,000 and has already paid UAH 80,000 toward the same claim.
- Confirmed debt: UAH 900,000
- Confirmed heir’s share: 50%
- Value of property actually received: UAH 380,000
- Already paid: UAH 80,000
The share of the debt is UAH 450,000, but the value limit is UAH 380,000. After accounting for UAH 80,000 in payments, the estimated maximum balance is UAH 300,000.
The example does not prove that a debt exists or allocate the overall value cap among multiple creditors. The deadline, debt composition, property valuation, and documents must be checked separately.
What to prepare for a reliable calculation
- Contract, IOU, court decision, enforcement document, or other basis for the debt, with a breakdown of its components.
- Documents proving acceptance of the inheritance and the specific heir’s certificate of inheritance.
- A document showing this heir’s share, without independently assuming an equal division.
- Inventory and valuation of property actually received by this heir, as well as information about encumbrances.
- The creditor’s claim and evidence of its date, addressee, dispatch, and receipt.
- Receipts, bank statements, or acknowledgments for payments already made toward this claim.

Frequently asked questions
Is an heir liable for all the deceased’s debts?
No, not automatically. First check whether the obligation belonged to the deceased, whether it was inseparably linked to their person, whether the inheritance was accepted, and whether the creditor retained the right to claim.
Why is an already confirmed heir’s share needed?
Article 1282 of the Civil Code of Ukraine links the individual claim amount to the heir’s share. A will, compulsory share, renunciation, failure to accept, or dispute may change it, so the calculator does not determine the share independently.
What value should be used for the property received?
The confirmed value of property actually received by a particular heir is required, not the value of the entire estate. For real estate, shares, or encumbered property, check the valuation method against the documents.
Can the full value of the property be applied to each creditor?
No. This is one overall liability limit for a particular heir, not a separate cap for each claim. Several creditors require a consolidated register of claims and payments.
Does another heir’s unpaid portion pass to one heir?
The calculator does not assume such redistribution. It calculates only the individual limit for a specific heir based on their documented share and the property received.
Does the calculator check the creditor claim deadline?
No. The period under Article 1281 of the Civil Code of Ukraine depends on events and the creditor’s knowledge. Use the dedicated time-limit calculator and check proof of service.
